So Long Simon! See You On X-Factor

Before I get into my final recap of Season 9 here is some Idol news:

Ellen launches new record label

Future pop stars of the world: You need to be on YouTube.
Greyson Chance, the kid with a viral YouTube video of his “Paparazzi" cover, has gotten a record deal with none other than Ellen DeGeneres, as she'll announce on her show today.
For all of those who wondered if Chance was Justin Bieber 2.0, it looks like he might be. And yes, you read that correctly: DeGeneres has created her own record label, all because of Chance.
“Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven,” DeGeneres says on her show. “He is my first artist and we are making a record together.”
The 6th grader appeared on DeGeneres’ show about two weeks ago, and since then, the views of his video have skyrocketed to more than 30 million. Chance will be back on her show today to perform his original song, "Broken Hearts," and to talk about what it’s like to become suddenly famous and also land a record deal before exiting puberty. In a word, as Chance tells DeGeneres, “It’s awesome.”
DeGeneres added in the statement that she plans to continue using her show to find new talent to add to the label, as she did with Chance. (Like we said earlier, get on YouTube!)

If you missed his performance, here it is:

Confirmed performers on tonights Finale Show are:
Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Kris Allen and Enrique Iglesias.

Rumored to perform:
Janet Jackson, Joe Cocker, Hall & Oats, Chicago, The Bee Gees and Melissa Etheridge.

Other rumors:
Paula Abdul returns?  Normound Gentile will perform?  Madonna is the leading candidate to replace Simon?

Recap:
Last night was the final performance show of Season 9 and the final chance for Simon to rip someone to pieces on National Television until his new show, the X-Factor debuts in the fall.  Considering the garbage songs selections for the final showdown I was surprised that he didn't go out with guns a blazin.  Let's take a look at those song selections:

Lee will sing "The Boxer," "Everybody Hurts," and "Beautiful Day."
Crystal will sing "Me and Bobby McGee," "Black Velvet," and "Up To The Mountain."

In what can only be described as a blatent attempt to throw Lee under the bus Simon Fuller selected a terrible song for Lee's vocal range and abilities.  "Everybody Hurts" made everybody hurt.  Even Lee seemed to know that his chances of winning were slipping away after struggling through the REM anti-suicide anthem.  Then, in an even more suspect move, U2's power ballad, "Beautiful Day" was choosen as the song he will record if he wins.  WTF?  This makes no sense.  Did the show own Bono some money or something?  And lastly, Lee, what were you thinking dude?  "The Boxer?"  Really?  A song the exposes your flaws as a vocalist and is somewhat of a downer of a finale song?  Dude!  Come on?  I thought you were in it to win it?

Crystal on the other hand was back in the Judges good graces and it was all just a love-fest for her 3 performances.  Personally I hate the Janis song and am with Simon that "Black Velvet" should be banned from all future Idol shows and auditions.  Crystal did sing better last night than she has in weeks and  clearly out-performed Lee who was just so overwhelmed on the Nokia stage in front of 7000 screaming fans.  Crystal was relaxed and seemed right at home which was a far cry from her rehearsal when she kept forgetting the lyrics to her songs.  About the only downside of Crystal's performances last night was the hideous gown she was stuffed into and her near tumble down the stairs because she can barely walk in high heels.  Crystal saved her best for last though as her rendition of the Patty Griffin contemporary folk song, "Up To The Mountian" stole the show.  This song has been getting a lot of play, what with Susan Boyle covering it on her album as well as Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire.  Kelly actually performed it on Idol Gives Back a few years ago.  But Crystal's version trumps them all and swept her into the voting hours as the apparent favorite to win.

This being Idol, anything can happen.  Just look at last season or season 5 if you think this one is in the bag.

So who's it going to be Lee or Crystal?  Crystal or Lee?

It's up the the voting public.

The End Is Finally Upon Us....Hal-Lee-lujah!

With just one show to go before the worst season in American Idol history is officially over, only 2 contestants remain.  It should be no surprise that Crystal and Lee survived the cut thanks to the over 47 million votes that were cast.  Once again the results show was 30 minutes too long and full of performances that were completely worthless.

Next season American Idol will be changing their format.  The performance shows will be and hour and a half and the results shows will be 30 minutes.  Hallelujah!

Perez Hilton foistered more garbage on us (besides his doodlings on his website and the fact that he's using up precious oxygen that more deserving people could be benefitting from) when he introduced us to Travis Garland who he claimed is a better singer/performer than Justin Timberlake.  WAAAAAHHHHHTTTTTT?  Travis performed (I use that term about as loosly as I did all season for the crappy Idol contestants) "Believe" and if I am being completely honest (I will miss Simon's catchphrase) I believe that it SUCKED!!!!
Luckily we shouldn't have to be subjected to this kind of nonsense next season, if there is a next season.

Then we were treated to a taped performance from Justin Bieber.  Can you say played out?  This kid is everywhere and I'm starting to get get sick of him.  No I don't have the Bieber Fever that seems to be running wild but for those of you who do, I give you this:

Returning from the absurd, we can now focus on the duel between Crystal and Lee.  This has been a foregone conclusion for weeks.  Despite the rumors flying around that the Idol heavies forced Casey to change his song selection at the last minute to the slow and boring pile of poo that he delivered, there was no way Casey was making it to the final over Lee or Crystal.  The only thing that would have made the night a success was if this (thanks again to VFTW for this fantastic graphic) had happened when the Top 2 were announced:

As you will see below, it is a very close race for this season's AG Idol winner.  Yolanda drops into a 3-way tie for first place with Scott alone in second and Lois/Betty/Mary M. is a tie for third.  It will all come down to next week to see if we have a new champion or champions as Kristen is too far back to repeat as champ. Scott and April picked Crystal to win it all and bet 4 and 3 points respectively on it so it's really going to be a good results show.  Finally something exciting from Season 9!

So here are the current standings and who we selected to be set "Free Willy."  I've been fighting with this darn thing to post for the last 25 minutes.  Sometimes technology is as bad as a Kenny Loggins song.  Thanks for the heads up on Fantasia's performance April.  I'm now looking forward to watching it later once Alyssa gets home from dance rehearsal.  Gotta love the DVR.

Top 4 Fail! & Current Standings

Playing along with Idol this week I have chosen "The Show Must Go On," by Queen which appeared (at least a version of it anyway) in the movie, Moulin Rouge as my Songs of the Cinema theme for this post.
Before the Judges start nitpicking my selection and wondering what Moulin Rouge is all about and how it connects to me as a blogger, I want to clear the air.  I chose the song for 2 reasons.  The first being that regardless of how mind numbingly painful and boring each week's Idol performance show is, I must continue to watch and recap here in print. Despite my desire to do anything other than sit through yet another lackluster group of performances of hideously idiotic song choices and/or arrangements.  And second, because Scott is in Paris (where I got married last September!) enjoying fabulous wine, amazing food and all the wonderous sights and sounds of the City of Lights.  I wish I was there too instead of sitting in my crappy office recapping another crappy Idol show.  The show must go on.........WHYYYYYYYY???????

Was anyone expecting this night to be a success?  If they were, then that thought must have occurred to them prior to seeing the selection list for the contestants of iTunes.  Here is a sampling of the list which the contestants aren't even required to pick from:

We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) – Tina Turner

You’ll Be in My Heart – Glenn Close & Phil Collins

As you can see, the majority of these songs are pure and utter garbage.  Why on Earth would anyone want to sing these songs is beyond me and that is the fault of Ken Warwick and the rest of the production company.  If you give the contestants a pile of crap and ask them to make something delicious out of it, you shouldn't be surprised when that something delicious looks, smells and tasts like crap.  Honestly, could you see Crystal singing Lose Yourself by Eminem?  And Jai Ho?  Really?  Here are the lyrics to that song:

Jai Ho
Jai Ho
Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Ratti Ratti Sachi Maine Jaan Gavayi Hai
Nach Nach Koylo Pe Raat Bitayi Hai
Akhiyon Ki Neend Maine Phoonko Se Uda Di
Neele Tare Se Maine Ungli Jalayi Hai
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Chakh Le Ho Chakh Le Ye Raat Shahad Hai Chakh Le
Rakh Le Haan Dil Hai Dil Aakhri Had Hai Rakh Le
Kala Kala Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na

Kala Kala Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale, Jai Ho, Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Kab Se Ha Kab Se Tu Lab Pe Ruki Hai Keh De
Keh De Ha Keh De Ab Aankh Jhuki Hai.. Keh De

Aisi Aisi Roshan Aankhe Roshan Dono Bhi Hai Hai Kya
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

Jai Ho
Jai Ho

How funny would it have been to see Big Mike performing that little number?

Alas, the contestants picked the following to bore us to tears with:
Lee DeWyze: Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose” -- Hated it!
Michael Lynche: Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There” -- Really hated it!
Casey James: Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” -- Hated it less than the others but only slightly.
Crystal Bowersox: Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” -- What the &%$# was that?  Epic Fail!

The only bright spots in the entire show were the duets:
Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze: Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová’s “Falling Slowly”
Michael Lynche & Casey James: Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman”

Ellen stating that she has loved a woman.  And Simon having no idea what "Free Willy" is or any frame of reference to American Cinematic classic like Caddyshack.

So who will go home tonight?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below (not that anyone other than April will actually comment).

Is anyone excited to see Daughtry perform their new single September?  Raise your hand if a performance from Fantasia was what you were craving!  And Bon Jovi will help fill the hour that will see yet another horrid group number and Ford commercial.  Yippee!!  The show must go on.....

They Did It Harry's Way

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!

Did you all enjoy Harry Connick Jr night on Idol?  Oh forgive me, I meant to say Frank Sinatra night.  It was an easy mistake to make considering Connick (as Seacrest kept referring to him in the video opening) took charge of all the song arrangements, played on each song, brought half his band and provided critique on occassion during judging.  To quote a friend of mine who posted this during the show, "Frank must be rolling in his grave right now and if possible, he may have thrown up in his mouth a little."  I completely understood where he was coming from as only 2 of the Top 5 contestants bothered to make an effort worthy of Ol' Blue Eyes.  And that effort only extended to the singing/performance and not to the whole package (at least for Mike, Aaron and Lee).  What do I mean?  Well I'll tell you (like you were worried).  Take a few minutes and Google Frank Sinatra and then count how many photos you find of him dressed like an Abercrombie and Fitch or Gap ad.  I'll save you the trouble (unless you are looking to kill some time then by all means Google away!) because you won't find any.  Sinatra was the dean of swagger, of cool and of dapper dress.  The man knew how to look the part and live the part.  Sure jeans cost $300 these days and are very high fashion but when performing Sinatra songs to an audience of 20 million or even an audience of 20 people you should take an extra minute or two and put on the suit pants and the wingtips (make sure they are nice and shiny) to go with the jacket and/or vest, tie and pocket square.  For crist sakes, his family was in the audience and low and behold, they were dressed up.  I'd even extend this complaint to Simon Cowell who apparently has forgotten how to button his shirts.  I keep expecting to see Tatiana del Toro pop out of his forest of chest hair and start singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."  But I digress....back to the topic at hand.

I have to gice Casey his due.  For weeks on end I've been bashing him for his Western shirt and jeans uniform.  Lats night Casey understood that to be the man, you need to look like the man.  So Casey dressed up.  Sadly his vocals on "Blue Skies" were less than stellar and he will most likely find himself back in the bottom three.  I thought he did a pretty good job both vocally and by moving around the stage (albeit sparingly) in an attempt to not look like a statue.  But where Casey was ripped by the Judges for his poor vocals, Aaron was praised.  Why?  I have no idea.

Here's my thoughts on Aaron and his rendition of "Fly Me To the Moon".  They come in the form of a riff on the Old Spice commercial with Isaiah Mustafa:  'Hello ladies, look at Aaron, now back to Casey now back to Aaron, now back to Casey, sadly, he isn't Casey, but if he stopped dressing in clothes that are 2 sizes too big for him and started picking clothes from Crew Cuts, he could possibly look like Casey.  Look down, back up, where are you? Your on a stage with the man your mom wishes you'd dress like. What's in your hand? We have no idea because your sleeves are too long.  Look again, Aaron is in the bottom three because he sounds like a wonded baby animal when he sings.  Will Aaron be voted out?  Anything is possible when you butcher Sinatra.  The Judges are deaf."

Does anyone else find it interesting that there is only one girl left in the competition?  Especially when this was supposed to be the year (purported by all the Judges on various talk shows and in magazine interviews) that a girl would win?  Well it's now all up to Crystal and based on her last few performances, she is losing ground rapidly to Lee.  Crystal has been the front runner all season but what was once a run-away is now going to come right down to the wire and a photo finish is probably going to be needed to determine the winner.  Crystal looked the part last night in a lovely gown and updo but her performance of "Summer Wind" was anything but breezy and refreshing.  Not only do I not care what personal reasons were behind her selection of the song, I also don't care to hear Randy say "in it to win it" to someone that tried to quit the show.  If she were truly "in it to win it" then she wouldn;t need to explain herself each week because her performance would have already done the talking.  Time to shut up Crystal and just take the comments Tim Urban style (silently with a smile) and do better next time.

Guess who's "in it to win it?"  Well that would be Mike, according to Randy.  Sure his rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight" was better than Aaron, Casey and Crystal's offerings but does that warrent the praise her received?  Yes and no.  I thought he sounded pretty good (compared to but again, he dropped a few too many runs into the melody - which Connick told him no to do (have any of the contestants actually listened to the mentor's advice this season?) and he almost completely dressed the part but his swagger still comes off a bit conceited/entitled for me.  It shouldn't hurt him thought as he should be in the Top 4.

Lee "Mini Connick" DeWyze picked a good time to have probably his best week to date.  He finally showed some life on stage and let loose.  "That's Life" could be the life for Lee if he manages to feed off the confidence that he showed last night and actually steal this season's crown.  I've said it before, Lee has the perfect voice for radio and he certainly has the look that the ladies seem to like (even if I still want to hit him with a 2x4) but if he doesn't grow from this week and he pulls a Casey (one step forward three steps back) he'll ensure that Crystal gets the title of Season 9 winner.....actually, that might not be a bad thing.

What did you all think of the show?  Are you excited for tonight?  Lady Gaga and Harry Connick, Jr!  Not a bad twosome.  Sadly we still get a Ford commercial and a group Lemming lipsync fiasco.  Leave comments below!

Congratulations to Scott to leaps into the lead after last weeks dibacle.
